When you’re 103 years old, your past life is to others as impersonal as a history book—filled with experiences and memories as foreign to those you love as it is to strangers. Something brought home to an old woman, who having lived all of her life in the same house, is dying in the very bed she was born in. Reared amidst a heritage of bone-deep pride in family, love of her land, and abiding faith in her Catholic religion, the old woman discovers a wide divide between her family values and those of her two granddaughters who are keeping a death watch. It's then that the old woman must decide if holding on to her heritage truly means letting go.

Before you read this book, let me explain what it is. It's literature. It's not pop fiction. It is meant to prompt deeper thought, reflection, and emotion. It's not simply a plot-driven chain of events. If you only judge a book on whether you "liked the story," or, "you did not like the story," you will not be equipped to understand this short book and its message. You must think deeper than the literal.Having said that, this is one of the most profound stories I have read outside of literature classes. Extremely touching. Although I certainly enjoy a good plot-driven story, it is very refreshing get away from that now and then, and to read a book like this one. If you understand its message (yes, literature tends to have a message within, rather than just an entertaining sequence of events--imagine that!), it will bring tears to your eyes. What a lovely work this is. Luckily, I had a box of tissue near.
STOP READING HERE IF YOU WANT TO THINK THE MESSAGE THROUGH FOR YOURSELF.
Of course, as with any good literature, "messages" can be interpreted differently by different people. Here is what I got out of it: that of the rift of values and attitudes between the generations of yesteryear and the generations of today, and also, the tendency we all have as human beings to travel down our own singular path and trivialize that which others have cherished through their entire lifetimes along their own path. So many profound experiences for each of us that mean absolutely nothing to others. It could even be rendered down to the theme of "selfishness." Also, there was allusion to the way technology has stripped us of so much, in addition to giving us so much. You could consider that as a major theme here as well. The story is fertile ground for literary allusion. I can think of a few more, but I'll stop. You decide.
This was an extremely sad story for me because I've seen this same story play out over the course of my lifetime several times amongst various family members. The story is so well-written that it is well worth reading even if you don't "get it" at first. Read it a few times and ponder. Perhaps some of you in the younger generation will better understand a different perspective than that of your own after having read this story.
Beyond all of that, it's a lovely story even if you are only reading it for the prose and writing quality--eloquently written. Enjoy it! I certainly did...

End Of Eden edition by Renee Goudeau Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my fair and honest review.
Renee Goudeau writes with a flowing lyricism that takes you deep into the south and explores parent/child relationships. The characters are easy to relate to. This is a very character given story. Don't expect lots of action, though there is plenty of drama!
There just isn't a "good" way to put it I didn't like this book. The story line was okay....but I don't like "flowery" and the ending made no sense to me.
I enjoyed this short story. The story line is well written and in good taste. The characters are believable and the story holds your attention from begining to end. It is well worth reading.
I did not particularly care for the ending of the story as it seemed to change the tone abruptly. Perhaps it was just not what I was expecting. However, for the body of the story, I enjoyed it. The memories of the old woman gradually unfolded a richly textured life, set against the background of a changed world. The two granddaughters were not much developed, but this was not a flaw as they served principally as foils to bring out the character of their grandmother. I found it to be a solid, well written, very readable story.
I love tales of adventure and tales of suspense and post apocalypse stories, but at heart I am a big fan of literary fiction. Of Steinbeck, Homer, Joyce, Hemingway et cetra.
To be honest, I bought this short story as I recognized the talent through the 'Look Inside' feature (ah shame on me!), but not in that I kept this story on my kindle reading it several times. I love the prose and the way the story puts life and innocent wisdom in perspective. It absolutely puts the 'shivers' down your spine at the glory of life so beautifully written.
So recently I revisited this authors product page to grab some more of his/her gems and found this short story cover had been changed. Hope the author did not change the content ... it is a classic!
Just one last note, I pitied the grand-daughters Zoe and Angela, because little did they know ;)
